What is Huangcha?

Huangcha or "Yellow Tea" is a rare and less known type of tea that is mainly produced in China. Among all the six types of tea, namely Green, White, Yellow, Oolong, Black and Pu-erh, Huangcha is the most underrated one. The unique processing method of Huangcha gives it a distinct texture, aroma, and flavor that sets it apart from all other types of tea.

How Huangcha is Made?

Huangcha is created by a unique process that takes some of the techniques for green tea and black tea, yet has its distinct characteristics. After plucking the buds and leaves, the tea makers cease the oxidation process by heating the leaves for a short amount of time. Later, the leaves are stored to get rid of any excess moisture which further promotes the fermentation process. After the process of fermentation, the tea leaves are wrapped in long cloth strips, and dried with low-temperature charcoal heat for 1-3 days until they have a yellowish tinge.

The Taste of Huangcha

Compared to other types of tea, drinking Huangcha could be an entirely different experience because of its unique taste. When brewed, Huangcha produces a rich and mellow taste, with a hint of sweetness and a nutty aroma that lingers pleasantly on the tongue. With less bitterness than green or black tea, Huangcha offers a more harmonious and balanced flavor, making it one of the most favorite teas among tea lovers.

Brewing Huangcha

Huangcha should be brewed with cooler water than other teas, at around 80-90°C (176-194°F) to prevent it from becoming overly astringent. Its leaves are also more delicate than other teas, so take care not to brew it for too long or with water that is too hot. Ideally, Huangcha should be brewed for 2-3 minutes. Some people also prefer to brew Huangcha in a traditional Yixing clay teapot which is believed to enhance the flavor of the tea. Huangcha pairs well with a variety of foods, such as mild cheese, grilled fish, and roasted nuts.

Health Benefits of Huangcha

Like other types of tea, Huangcha offers a wide range of health benefits. Huangcha is low in caffeine and high in theanine, an amino acid that has a calming effect on the nervous system. It is also rich in antioxidants that help protect the body from harmful free radicals. Drinking Huangcha regularly may help lower blood pressure and improve digestion. Also, some studies suggest that Huangcha may help reduce the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Final Thoughts

Huangcha may be less well known than other types of tea, but it is a unique and underrated beverage that deserves a spot in your tea cabinet. Its unique flavor, aroma, and health benefits make it a great choice for anyone looking for a new kind of tea. So if you are tired of the usual green or black tea, give Huangcha a try, and you might just find your new favorite tea.
